Who I Am

Karina Ask is a self-taught artist working at the intersection of surrealism and symbolism through self-discovery and its embodiment in art. The inner paintings that appear in her mind become real and material in the world through color, form, and self-knowledge.

Artist Statement

Painting as a Map of the Inner World

Artistic Position

I work at the intersection of self-discovery, symbolism, depth of knowledge, feeling, and art. My paintings are not depictions of the external world, but maps of the internal: states, transformations, archetypes that are difficult to name with words, but can be seen.

The central project — Inner Eye — is a series of symbolic portraits where the human eye becomes the entry point into a personal totem world. Animals, natural symbols, archetypal images line up around it not as decoration, but as a system of meanings.

On the Mirror

My painting works like a mirror. It compels a person to experience emotions — sometimes the viewer realizes something new for themselves and feels what they did not know, or what they hid from.

Often, it is the shadow side — the image of the beast or the mask — that becomes the part which, after its acceptance, becomes a support that was previously impossible to lean on.
